If you are old enough, do you remember listening to rpm “kiddie” records when you were growing up? Or maybe your parents did. Being a child of the late 40’s and 50’s, I do. It is this fond memory and the nostalgia for them, which started me off on a collection in uncharted waters–vintage children’s records. A majority of people reading this article who grew up in the post World War II years had a collection of children’s records. It is surprising, therefore, in this current era of nostalgia craze and “anything is collectable”, that the hobby of collecting old kiddie records has not yet been established. Up until , no comprehensive guide book on the subject had been published. That situation has been resolved now that I have published my “The Complete Guide To Vintage Children’s Records”, the first complete identification and price guide of vintage kiddie records.

It was the first permanent IBM installation in the world to do scientific work Comrie’s Greenwich setup had not been permanent. In late , Eckert presented a paper on this work to the American Astronomical Society. A seemingly mundane but significant aspect of this work was the new ability to feed the result of one computation into the next and print the results of these calculations directly, thus eliminating the transcription errors that were common in astronomical and lunar tables [ 17 ].
To illustrate with a quote from Kay Antonelli, University of Pennsylvania, referring to her wartime work [ 34 ], “We did have desk calculators at that time, mechanical and driven with electric motors, that could do simple arithmetic. You’d do a multiplication and when the answer appeared, you had to write it down to reenter it into the machine to do the next calculation. We were preparing a firing table for each gun, with maybe 1, simple trajectories.

Sinatra soon learned they were auditioning for the Major Bowes Amateur Hour show, and “begged” the group to let him in on the act. No more than 8, copies of the record were sold, and further records released with James through , such as “All or Nothing At All”, also had weak sales on their initial release. Though not quite on a par with the anti-slavery movement of the 19th century, temperance was a very significant morally based social movement in the U.S. and had its roots in the still pervasive damage done to some individuals and their families by the improper use of alcohol.

Beginnings — [ edit ] Original home of Columbia in Washington, D. Easton — and a group of investors. It derived its name from the District of Columbia , where it was headquartered. This would include most flat records, with the exception of the early Edison and Pathe discs, which used a vertical cutting method. Don’t play thick Edison discs on your Victor, as these are vertically cut, and the Victrola’s needle will ruin them. Victor, Columbia, Regal, Paramount, Banner, Aeolian, and a host of other brands will all play correctly. Some brands not Victor offered tonearms that would play either the lateral or vertical discs by rotating the soundbox assembly. The reader is warned that playing 78’s made after on a Victrola will cause the record to wear very quickly, as these records were designed for the lighter tonearms that were used on later electric phonographs.
Thus, it is not wise to play “big band” or Frank Sinatra 78’s on any pre acoustic phonograph. I’m not a record collector, and I have no information on the value of records other than to say that That hurts a lot of people’s feelings, but it’s absolutely true. They made hundreds of millions of records in the Victrola era, and boxcar loads of them are still around, so the prices are quite low.
We usually find records by the boatload at flea markets and swap meets. Thus far, we have yet to come across a “rare” one that was worth more than a few bucks. Using a worn needle will cause rapid record wear. An older gentleman recently drove up to a phonograph show in a Ford F full of old 78 records in wood crates.

But also engraved in the wax is the following text: Also, according to the label, Columbia apparently won a Grand Prize in St. It is a single sided record, and since Columbia started making double-faced records in , my best guess is that this record dates from the period. Maybe one of you guys or gals can help me narrow this down? An Illustrated History of the Columbia Record Label – , your copy was made between The records usually continued to be issued under the same catalog number but with whatever label design scheme was current.
For example, very early s Caruso recordings on Victor Red Seal remained in the catalog for decades so you can find copies of such recordings with examples of all of the various label design changes that took place during those years. The same is also pretty common on successful records issued in the year or two before Victor changed from the its “scroll” label design to its “circular” label design in You can find examples of many swing era recordings by Benny Goodman and Fats Waller on both the scroll label and the circular label.
If all you are interested in is just a copy in the best possible condition to listen to, it usually doesn’t matter one way or another. But my understanding is that, in most cases, the label design that was current when the record was initially issued is usually considered to be the more collectible. Those very early Columbia recordings can also be confusing in that, when Columbia came out with its double disc records in , a great many of those early recordings were paired up and issued under a new catalog number.
